Detroit — The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Nov. 11 elected new chairmen for five committees during its semi-annual assembly in Baltimore, including Detroit’s own Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, who will become the next leader of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine.
Archbishop Vigneron was elected to the three-year position on a vote of 149-66 over Bishop Robert J. McManus of Worcester, Mass. Archbishop Vigneron will serve for one year as chairman-elect of the committee before beginning his three-year term next year.
The archbishop, known by many as a scholar and expert on Catholic history and doctrine, has served previously as a member of the Committee on Doctrine and on the bishops’ Subcommittee on the Catechism. Last year, he was one of 10 bishops in the running to succeed Cardinal Timothy Dolan as president of the USCCB.
The bishops also elected New Orleans Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond as secretary-elect of the Archdiocese for the Military Services; Indianapolis Auxiliary Bishop Christopher Coyne as chairman-elect of the Committee on Communications; San Antonio Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., as chairman-elect of the Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church; Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi of Mobile, Ala., as chairman-elect of the Committee on National Collections; and New York’s Cardinal Dolan as chairman-elect of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities.
