Bishop Foley state champs in baseball, soccer

Detroit -- Bishop Foley’s baseball and soccer teams ended the season triumphantly, each notching a state championship on June 18.

On the soccer field, Ventures ladies’ soccer secured its 12th Division 4 state championship with a 2-1 win over Lansing Christian. The Ventures didn’t spare the dramatics on the field of Williamston High School, as Erin Weide broke a 1-1 tie with just less than three minutes left in the game. Krystal Starling earned the assist.

In the first half, it was Weide with an assist on a Lauren Cross goal.

Venture goalie Rachel Fischer made four saves. Bishop Foley’s offense did much to keep Lansing Christian at bay, too, however. The Ventures racked up 22 shots while Lansing Christian managed just six.

On the diamond, Ventures mens’ baseball exacted some revenge in the Division 3 quarterfinals by topping Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard, the team that had beat them in the Catholic League Championships earlier in the spring at Comerica Park.

On June 14, Bishop Foley came out on top, beating Fr. Gabriel Richard by a 4-1 score.

The Ventures rode their strong offense, and senior pitcher Daniel Zuchowski, to come away with a lopsided win in the final game, topping Bridgman by an 8-2 tally.

After a first inning in which each team scored two, the Ventures went on to add six more by the third, while Zuchowski held Bridgman scoreless the rest of the game.

Bishop Foley seniors Brad Schalk and Jeff Schalk each drove in two runs, as did junior catcher Brett Sunde. Zuchowski and freshman Garrett Schilling also added an RBI each.
