CC tennis takes Catholic League crown









Bloomfield Twp. – Detroit Catholic Central served up a Catholic League championship last Saturday.

The Shamrocks scored 28 points in the multi-school Division I tournament, which was played at different indoor locations, with the finals at Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness.

The Division II tournament was rescheduled for this weekend due to rain.

Brother Rice, the defending Catholic League champs, put up a battle with CC in the Division I tournament, winning two doubles matches and placing second with 19 points. U-D Jesuit was third with 13 points; De La Salle was fourth with 8 points; and Notre Dame Prep turned in 3 points.

“The competition was great,” said Catholic Central captain Joe Dubé. “We fought hard today and came out on top.”

CC swept the singles competitions. Dubé beat Brother Rice’s Jack Parks in #1 singles (6-2, 6-2). In a hard-fought #2 singles matchup, Brother Rice’s Gunnar Peery fell to CC’s Michael Dubé (6-3, 6-3). CC’s Eric Guindi beat Brother Rice’s Jack Hamaty in #3 singles ((6-1, 5-7, 6-1). And Michael Trupiano topped U-D Jesuit’s Kevin Hurley (6-1, 6-1) in the #4 matchup.

Brother Rice split the doubles competitions with CC. The Shamrocks took #1 with Willy Willson and Kevin Hodgets topping Warriors Taylor Maks and Parker Gradolph (6-4, 6-0). Brother Rice’s Charlie Dillon and Ryan O’Connor beat out CC’s Greg Pilchak and Tim Hoffman (6-1, 6-2) in the #2 matchup. CC’s Brandon Kosinski and Derek Mumaw beat Brother Rice’s Colin Rapson and Chris Corbell (6-2, 6-4) in #3 doubles. And Brother Rice’s Taylor Maks and Marker Gradolph beat CC’s Zach Wisniewski and Mat Hermiz (1-6, 7-5, 6-3) in #4 doubles.

CC captain Brandon Kosinski stressed that the Catholic League win was a true team effort.

“It’s all about the team,” said Kosinski, a senior. “That’s how it was from the start..”
