Livonia Ladywood won its first CHSL girls golf championship since 2004, edging defending champ Farmington Hills Mercy by six strokes at Edgewood Country Club. Junior Jordyn Rioux led the Blazers with a 5-over-par 76, sharing the top individual honors with freshman Danielle Staskowski, of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. Senior Carley Hall (81), junior Lydia Cranmer (85), and sophomore Gabiella Scopone (88) composed Ladywood’s triumphant foursome.
BOYS TENNIS: Brother Rice and Notre Dame Prep
Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice edged runner-up University of Detroit Jesuit, 37-34, to win its fourth straight CHSL Division 1 title. Rice’s winners were Josh Anschuetz in singles, and Travis Tucker-Sam Schwartz, Evan Oesterle-Jack Brockhaus and C.J. Nelson-T. J. Schwartz in doubles.
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep took its second consecutive Division 2 crown, scoring 25-18 over runner-up Riverview Gabriel Richard. Notre Dame’s winners were Clark Meek in singles, and all four flights in doubles: Ryan Connors-Shawn Potwardowski, Adam Ihm-Brian Lee, Nick Raggio-Matt Wall and Alex Cousins-Luke Zerona.
GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY: Academy of the Sacred Heart
Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart beat Bloomfield Hills Marian, 4-3, in a shootout for its second straight CHSL crown.
BOYS SOCCER: Brother Rice and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
Senior Ryan Washeleski scored in the opening 90 seconds to give Brother Rice a lead it never relinquished, spoiling Novi Detroit Catholic Central’s bid for a repeat Division A-B title, 2-1. Marcello Rea scored the Warriors’ other goal. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s successfully defended its C-D title, fighting off a scrappy Dearborn Divine Child squad, 2-0. Luke Stoneback and Mike Beckett scored for the Eaglets.
FOOTBALL: Loyola, Lakes, St. Mary’s
Detroit Loyola won its sixth straight Prep Bowl victory, beating Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, 40-10, for the intersectional trophy. Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes dismissed Riverview Gabriel Richard, 49-21, for the C-D crown. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s smothered Warren De La Salle, 38-0, for the A-B title.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Shamrocks and Pioneers
Catholic Central placed six runners in the top 11 to win its ninth consecutive CHSL boys Div. 1-2 cross country championship. Sophomore Andrew Holten’s second-place finish led Riverview Gabriel Richard’s return to the Div. 3-4 winner’s circle for the first time since 2007.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Regina and Ladywood
Warren Regina finished three runners in the top five — seniors Teresa Diehl and Lauren Valentini and sophomore Betsy Lueck — to win its third straight girls Div. 1-2 title, while Livonia Ladywood won the Div. 3-4 crown for the first time since 2003.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard, Bishop Foley
Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard, ranked No. 1 Class B, was too much to handle for Class B No. 4 Pontiac Notre Dame Prep to claim its first-ever CHSL A-B volleyball title. Junior Jurnee Tipton piled up 20 kills to lead Richard. Madison Heights Bishop Foley trumped Allen Park Cabrini for its second C-D championship trophy to go alongside its 2011 victory.
GIRLS SWIMMING: Mercy for the 49th time!
Farmington Hills Mercy set three records en route to the girls swimming championship for the 25th year in a row, and the 49th in its history (1960, 1967-1989, 1991-2015). The record-setters were junior Alaina Skellett in the 100-yard butterfly (55.88), senior Ellyse Conn in the 500 freestyle (4:57.54) and sophomore Katie Minnich in the 100 backstroke (55.70). Bloomfield Hills Marian finished runner-up.
