Church collecting help for hurricane victims

Detroit — The Archdiocese of Detroit is joining in the efforts to help victims of Hurricane Matthew, a category five storm that ravaged the Caribbean Sea and southeastern United States, leaving hundreds dead in its wake.

Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron offered a statement urging prayers for the storm’s victims Oct. 10.

“We hold in prayer all those impacted by the deadly and destructive path of Hurricane Matthew as it moved across Haiti and up the east coast of the United States,” Archbishop Vigneron said. “And we stand in support of and in solidarity with the first-responders to this disaster, especially those from Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities USA.”

The hurricane made landfall in the poor island nation of Haiti on Oct. 4 and in Florida on Oct. 7, damaging homes, buildings and infrastructure and causing numerous deaths.
