Eight Catholic schools welcome new principals

Detroit — Three new principals will take over at local Catholic high schools this fall, and five new principals will assume the helm at archdiocesan grade schools.

At the high school level:



  • Richard Vanden Boom becomes principal at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes High School, succeeding Fr. Mike Gawlowski, who became pastor of the clustered parishes of St. Nicholas in Capac, St. Cornelius in Dryden and St. John the Evangelist in Allenton in July. Vanden Boom, a graduate of Pontiac Notre Dame Preparatory High School, is moving back to Michigan from Alaska for the opportunity.

  • Wyatt Jones III, former dean of students at Loyola High School in Detroit, will take over as principal of the school this fall. Scott Humphrey had been interim principal.

  • Thomas Oppat, a former academic dean at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, succeeds Bernadette Sugrue as principal at Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak.


At the grade school level:



  • Michele Jahn takes over as principal at Our Lady of Sorrows School in Farmington. Jahn was formerly at Flint Powers Catholic High School and takes over for Ann Whitfield.

  • Sr. Beth Ann Dillon, a Daughter of St. Mary of Providence, takes over as principal at Our Lady of Victory School in Northville. Sr. Dillon, who was featured on the Lifetime reality TV miniseries “The Sisterhood” and most recently was principal at a Catholic school in South Dakota, succeeds Karen Gessler.

  • Geoffrey Fisher, former assistant principal at St. Clare of Montefalco School in Grosse Pointe Park, takes over full time as principal, succeeding Sr. Kathy Avery, OSM.

  • Sharon Szuba, who served as assistant principal at St. Fabian School in Farmington Hills, becomes its new principal this fall, succeeding Mickey Holuta.

  • Kimberly Young, assistant principal at Cabrini Elementary School in Allen Park, takes over as principal. Young, former interim superintendent of Archdiocese of Detroit schools, takes over for Patricia Pollick.


In addition, three schools will welcome new assistant principals this fall: James Mio at Royal Oak Shrine High School, Jennifer Bero at Shrine Elementary School, and Tara Nodland at St. Regis Elementary School.
