In the two weeks leading up to Independence Day, the U.S. bishops have put together the Fortnight for Freedom campaign, which has been embraced by Catholics and dioceses nationwide. Here are details:
- What it is: The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging Catholics to respond to assaults on religious liberty by federal and state governments – including but not limited to the unjust health care mandate.
- When it is: Events are scheduled locally and nationwide from June 21 through July 4. A Mass for religious liberty will be celebrated by Archbishop Allen Vigneron at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 9844 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. Many other local events are scheduled, as well.
- What it entails: The bishops have identified several key areas of Catholic activities that are being limited by government intervention, including the controlling of internal church governance; promoting a culture of life; operating adoption and foster care programs; giving humanitarian aid; caring for undocumented immigrant families; and organizing Christian student groups on college campuses.
