Fr. Loren O'DeaFr. Loren O’Dea, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, died Oct. 14. He was 87 and had been living in Waterford.
Fr. O’Dea was born June 11, 1928, the son of Joseph and Harriet O’Dea. Fr. O’Dea had a career as a social worker, then as director of mental health at Pontiac General Hospital before entering Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit later in life. He was ordained June 12, 1993, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.
Fr. O’Dea served as associate pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Farmington from 1993-97, when he was granted senior status. Subsequent to a 2012 determination by the Archdiocese of Detroit that two allegations of sexual misconduct with minors prior to his ordination were substantive, Fr. O’Dea was permanently removed from public ministry.
Fr. O’Dea was preceded in death by his siblings J. Daniel Jr., Paul (Kathryn), Catherine, Robert (Lois), John “Jackie”, and Michael (Joan). He is survived by nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral Mass was Oct. 19 at St. Damien of Molokai Parish (St. Michael Church) in Pontiac. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Hope Cemetery, Pontiac.
