Genevieve Casey, 96, who wrote a book on Msgr. Clement Kern and served on the board of his foundation, died July 20. She is survived by cousin Germaine Allen and many other loving cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother Eugene, her sister Marilyn and nephew John. Genevieve’s life was one of service to her community and to God.
She was born in St. Paul, Minn., and moved to Detroit at an early age. She held a master’s degree in library science and worked in that field most of her life.
Ms. Casey started her career with the Detroit Public Library. One of her accomplishments there was the “Bookmobile,” a mobile library that took books into neighborhoods throughout Detroit. In the early 1960s, she became the state librarian. After completing her tenure in Lansing, Ms. Casey returned to Detroit to become a professor of library science at Wayne State University. She authored a book on Msgr. Clement Kern titled “Father Clement Kern: Conscience of Detroit,” published in 1989, and served on the board of his foundation.
The funeral Mass for Ms. Casey was July 25 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Grosse Pointe Woods. Memorial donations can be made to Manresa Jesuit Retreat House, the Father Clement Kern Foundation or the Professor Emerita Genevieve M. Casey Endowed Scholars Fund in Wayne State University’s School of Library and Information Science.
