Marian wins its third straight CHSL tennis tourney

Detroit -- Marian won its third consecutive Catholic League tennis championship on May 14 at the Farmington Raquet Club.

The Mustangs -- who were top-seeded in most categories -- won in each flight except for 2 doubles, which was taken by the tournament co-runner-up, Academy of the Sacred Heart. Mercy, which played in finals in five of the eight flights, tied for second with Sacred Heart.

In the 1 singles match, Marian junior Bailey Paradiso defeated Mercy senior Ariana Kabodian 7-5, 6-4.  Paradiso’s classmate Kelly Lunghamer found success both in the second singles contest, where she defeated Mercy sophomore Jessie Guindi, and in the first doubles match, teaming up with senior Catherine Christian to top Fr. Gabriel Richard seniors Alli Kosaian and Alyssa Stella.

Sacred Heart’s Hannah Gerard, a sophomore, and Mary Liesveld, a senior, beat out both the first- and second-seeded teams in Marian and Mercy on their way to a 2 doubles victory. In the semifinals, they won 8-6 against Marian’s Megan Callaghan and Macy Hudson. Sacred Heart’s duo then topped Mercy seniors Alyssa Muller and Kelsey Shaw for the win.

Marian sophomore Elaina Apaza and freshman Lauren Dietz showed poise in their respective finals, both ending up on the better side of 6-1, 6-0 scores to win the 3 and 4 singles. Marian sophomores Mallory Hudson and Olivia Underwood won the 3 doubles contest. Marian senior Maddie Hraminec and sophomore Bridget O’Hara won in 4 doubles.
