‘Meghan’s Miracle,’ local producer wins Emmy

Detroit — The 30-minute televised documentary about Meghan Salter — the Dearborn girl whose struggle to survive and parents’ faithfulness in standing by her have inspired many — won an Emmy for producer, writer and director Audrey Sommers at this year’s awards ceremony.

“I was so excited just to be nominated, because after all my years in television as a reporter and as a TV producer, this was my first Emmy nomination. I’ve won other awards for my work, but this is my first Emmy,” said Sommers, whose career included anchoring the news on WKBD-TV (Channel 50) and also a stint as a reporter for The Michigan Catholic.

Sommers said she tried to concentrate on being graceful and poised if she should win, as she sat in the audience at the 34th annual awards ceremony of the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on June 16.

But when her name was announced, she “leapt from my chair and bolted to the stage like a joyous schoolgirl who just won her first baseball championship.”

“I held the trophy high in the air, and blurted out the first thing that came to mind: ‘Thank you God, this one’s for you!’” Sommers recounted.

“Stories of Faith: Meghan’s Miracle” made its debut on the CTND Catholic cable TV channel in January 2011, before airing worldwide on EWTN last August and on the Catholic TV Network out of Boston this spring.

The show was envisioned as the first in series of “Stories of Faith” programs, but Sommers said financial backing is needed to make that happen.
“CTND, EWTN and the Catholic TV Network all want more ‘Stories of Faith’ programs, as do viewers. I would like to continue producing quality Catholic programming, but need a sponsor to help me do God’s work,” she said.

Sommers can be contacted at [email protected] or www.lectortraining.com.
