Mercy wins A-B Catholic League volleyball championship





Detroit -- Mercy High School captured its first Catholic League volleyball championship since 1991 with a 3-1 win over Marian in Livonia on Oct. 25. The win dashed Marian’s hopes of a third straight Catholic League title.

Playing the Catholic League championship match in the gymnasium of Madonna University, Mercy won their contest convincingly 25-11, 25-22, 18-25 and 25-18.

Mercy had come into the tournament strong, earning a first-round bye partially due to having defeated Marian a week before the Catholic League playoffs. In the second round of the playoffs, Mercy topped Ladywood.

Marian got past Divine Child in the first round and defeated Notre Dame Prep in the second to make it to the finals.

In the championship, Mercy’s Madeline Doyle led the way for the Marlins with 26 kills. Annie Bodien racked up 36 assists for Mercy, as well.

Honors for volleyball were handed out during the Prep Bowl on Oct. 23 at Ford Field. Making the All-Academic team in A-B volleyball were Stephanie Berge of Regina, Dawn Glefke of Lutheran North, Erin Klosterman of Marian, Katie Larin of Fr. Gabriel Richard, Shannon Hogg of Ladywood, Shelby Roberts of Gabriel Richard, Kelly Santicchia of Divine Child, Mary Kate Vincent of Mercy, and Brooke Scollin of Notre Dame Prep.

All-League winners were Stefanie Apruzzese, Brooke Scollin and Mary Kate Zinn of Notre Dame Prep; Katelynn Barszczowski of Lutheran North; Annie Bodien and Brooke Ruffolo of Mercy; Kari Fidelholtz and Mary Henry of Marian; AnneMarie Fischer and Molly Geppner of Fr. Gabriel Richard; McKenzie Kettner and Jenny Rhodes of Ladywood; and Alexandra Repasky of Gabriel Richard.

All-Catholic honors were taken by Dalton Tolliver and Lindsay Kander of Notre Dame Prep; Katy Rooney of Ladywood; Christina Porada and Ellyn Nedwicki of Divine Child; Alexandra Lovell and Alessandra Dietz of Marian; Lindsey Lerg and Madeline Doyle of Mercy; Brittany Kalmeta and Libby Edwards of Fr. Gabriel Richard; Kelsey Ferla of Gabriel Richard; and Chelsea DeLamiellure of Regina.

Coaches of the year were Loretta Vogel of Mercy and Betty Wroubel of Notre Dame Prep.
