NORTHVILLE — Our Lady of Victory Parish in Northville welcomed Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron to bless and rededicate their newly renovated church May 11.
“The church was standing room-only, lots of people, and the archbishop commented on how struck he was by the number of young families in our parish,” said Fr. Denis Theroux, pastor of Our Lady of Victory.
The renovations were brought about through the parish’s Changing Lives Together initiative, Fr. Theroux said, and the parish established five fundraising “milestones” to determine the renovation plans.
The parish reached its first milestone of $1.6 million during the campaign’s initial commitment weekend in October 2012, Fr. Theroux said. Thirty percent went toward initiatives at the archdiocesan level, and the remainder funded the church’s interior reconfiguration, which included new flooring, new lighting, central air-conditioning and a new sound system.
The second milestone of $1.9 million helped with renovating and adding 300 square feet onto the gathering space. The third milestone of $2.1 million brought about a canopy outside the entrance of the church; the fourth milestone of $2.3 million helped add central air-conditioning to the Fr. Ernie Porcari social hall.
The fifth and final milestone of $2.4 million brings a resurfacing of the parking lot; a project that will start this summer.
“The momentum just grew,” said Fr. Theroux, adding that the parish is only in its second of a three-year commitment period, “and more than 50 percent of the pledges are already paid in full.”
The interior of the church now features pews, the tabernacle in the sanctuary and a large new crucifix hanging above. Fr. Theroux said the new focus brings the eye to the sanctuary and ambo, and “is much more reverent.”
“I think it’s a beautiful new space, and people are proud of it and want to be a part of what is beautiful and good,” he said. “Isn’t that part of what our spiritual life is about?”
