Detroit -- Shrine came up big in the Catholic High School League cross country championships, held at Stoney Creek Park in Shelby Township on Oct. 23.
The Shrine girls team beat out Cabrini and Fr. Gabriel Richard with a score of 32. Shrine’s Emily Guirey had the best time at 20:35.69, while teammates Anna Goike (20:55.60), Morgan Button (21:21.41) and Clare Romano (21:45.33) also made the top ten, ranking 4th, 6th, and 10th, respectively.
Fr. Gabriel Richard’s Andrea Bodary (20:36.61) and Annie Patton (20:43.71) had second- and third-place finishes at the meet.
On the boy’s side, Cabrini’s Zane Belisle had the best time by a wide margin at 17:19.55. But it was Shrine who swept second- through fifth-place, with Ben Kendell (18:05.58), C.J. Dagher (18:12.60), Ben Nagle (18:13.59) and Matt Sutton (18:14.50). Shrine’s Matt Arce also finished in the top-ten with 18:31.96.
Cabrini’s boys team had an overall score of 23, which beat out Cabrini at 56 and Fr. Gabriel Richard at 72.
Winning the girls 1-2 title with a score of 35, Regina’s Kelsie Schwartz recorded the best run with a time of 19:16.85, while teammate Cassie Bloch came in second at 19:47.98 -- edging out Mercy’s Heather Smith, who scored a 19:48.42. Also in the top-ten for Regina were Christina Ridella, who placed seventh with a 20:09.03 time; and Jenny Ponkowski, who placed ninth with 20:32.86.
Second place in the 1-2 contest belonged to Divine Child, who had three runners in the top ten -- Lensey Brewis (19:58.26), Michelle Kerr (20:02.26) and Mackenzie Brewis (20:18.18). Divine Child had an overall score of 50. Mercy took third with a 79 score, Smith being the school’s only top-ten finisher.
Catholic Central showed dominance in the 1-2 boys matchup, registering an overall score of 26. Brother Rice came in second, scoring 72. U-D Jesuit was a close third at 76.
The top score of the day belonged to Warrior Tom Girardot, who ran a 15:57.44. Catholic Central runners grabbed the second, fourth, fifth and sixth spots, however with Andrew Garcia-Garrison (16:07.25), John-Paul Zebrowski (16:19.70); Austin Zebrowski (16:23.95) and Mackenzie Boyd (16:34.91). Divine Child’s Nick Soter earned the day’s third-best run at 16:13.27.
