Sr. Catherine Henry Schmid, OP

Sr. Catherine Henry Schmid, OP, formerly known as Viola Marie Schmid, died Nov. 25 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 89 and in the 68th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Schmid was born in Detroit to Henry and Catherine (Koenig) Schmid. She graduated from St. Anthony High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian.

Sr. Schmid spent 24 years in education in Chicago; California; and Jackson, Detroit and Pinckney, Mich. She taught at Queen of the Miraculous Medal, Jackson (1958-60); St. Mary, Pinckney (1966-67); St. Theresa, Detroit (1967-68); and St. Suzanne, Detroit (1968-70). She was a teacher and principal from 1960-66 at St. Gemma School in Detroit. From 1983-87, she was pastoral minister at Maryhaven in Southgate. Sister worked at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian for 13 years in the transportation, environmental and occupational therapy departments. From 1987-92, she was the mailroom supervisor of the Dominican Motherhouse.

Sr. Schmid is survived by a brother, Eugene Schmid of Farmington Hills.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Dec. 2. Burial is in the Congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican sister, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221.
