Sr. Cecilia Schmidt, IHM, 90, died May 1 at the IHM Health Care Center.
Sr. Schmidt was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Milwaukee to Philip and Angela (Bauer) Schmidt and was baptized Angela Cecilia. She had seven siblings and attended Precious Blood Grade School and Girls’ Catholic Central High School in Detroit and graduated from St. James High School in Ferndale. She entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1943, receiving the religious name Sr. Mary Dalene.
Sr. Schmidt earned degrees from Marygrove College and Wayne State University, along with state teaching certifications. For 30 years, she taught elementary school in Detroit at St. Boniface, Epiphany, Christ the King and St. Agnes; in Birmingham at Holy Name and St. Columban; in Warren at St. Anne; as well as serving in schools and parishes in Alabama, South Dakota, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Minnesota.
She retired to the Monroe motherhouse in 2005. Sr. Schmidt is survived by sisters Mary Schmidt, Emmerence Caverly and Patricia Smith; and many nieces and nephews. Her brothers Phillip “Thomas,” Gerald and Francis, and a sister, Beatrice Beddow, preceded her in death.
Mass of Christian burial was May 7 at the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus.
