Sr. Dorothy Joyce, IHM

Sr. Dorothy Joyce, IHM, formerly known as Sr. Marciana Joyce, IHM, died Sept. 5 at her home, the IHM Sisters’ Motherhouse in Monroe, where she had been under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe. She was 97.

Born Aug. 27, 1913 in Chicago to Charles and Kathryn (Eagan) Joyce, she was given the name Dorothy. She graduated from St. Mary of Redford High School in Detroit.

She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1932, taking the religious name of Sr. Marciana.

Sr. Joyce taught in formal education for 53 years at St. Michael, Flint; St. Catherine, St. Patrick, St. Boniface, St. Charles and Gesu, all in Detroit; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; St. Charles, Coldwater; St. Mary, Akron, Ohio; St. John, Jackson; St. John, Benton Harbor; and a total of 26 years at St. Domitilla, St. Felicitas and St. Rene in Chicago.

After two years of full-time teaching at St. Domitilla, Sr. Joyce became a substitute teacher or teacher aide at St. Domitilla; St. Charles, Melrose Park and St. Eulalia School in Marywood, Ill. returned to the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe in 2009 where she resided until her death.

Sr. Joyce is survived by nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 14 at the IHM Motherhouse, Monroe.

Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery on the motherhouse campus
