Sr. Elaine Mary Hart, RSM, of Farmington Hills died Sept. 19 at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia. She was 92.Elaine Hart was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Evansville, Ind., to Dewey and Louise (Egan) Hart. She was the third of seven children. After the family moved to Saginaw, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Detroit on Sept. 7, 1941, making final vows Aug. 16, 1948.
For 20 years, Sr. Hart taught middle school throughout Michigan in Grand Rapids, Grand Haven, Hazel Park, Midland, Howell, Ludington and Warren, coordinating art programs while she pursued her master’s degree in art from Notre Dame University. In 1966, Sr. Hart began directing religious education programs in parishes in Pinconning, Warren, Port Huron, Saginaw, Bay City and Flint, as well as in Ohio.
Sr. Hart is survived by her sisters, Janeen Cloutier and Siena Hintz; several nieces and nephews; many friends; as well as her beloved Sisters of Mercy. A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Sept. 22 in McAuley Center’s Sacred Heart Chapel. Burial was to take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
