Sr. GraceSr. Grace Schwietering, SC, died Aug. 2 at the age of 91.

Sr. Schwietering was born Ruth Elizabeth on Feb. 11, 1926, the oldest of four children to Edward and Bernadette (Bruns) in Cincinnati. She was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 73 years, entering in 1944. She earned degrees from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati and the University of Detroit.

Sr. Schwietering taught elementary school for 14 years and was a principal for 33 years at schools in Ohio and Michigan, including Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak (1955-57), and St. Mary, Lansing (1960-65), before moving to St. Leo, Detroit, in 1968, where she served for 25 years. In the 1970s and 1980s in inner-city Detroit, following the riots, Sr. Schwietering used a team approach in the school which offered stability and security to the children. Most of them had so much instability in their homes that they thrived in the environment set by the faculty and staff at St. Leo.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 9 in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Delhi Township, Ohio. Burial will be in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
