Sr. Irene Pieper, CSJ

Sr. Irene Pieper, CSJ, died June 26 in Kalamazoo. She was 95 and a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 77 years.





Born to Hugo and Clara Pieper in Mitchell, Nebraska, Sr. Pieper entered the congregation June 21, 1934. She pronounced first vows Jan. 8, 1937 and final vows Jan. 8, 1940.

Sr. Pieper spent a 53-year ministry in teaching, serving in Michigan, Illinois and Hawaii. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, she taught at St. Benedict in Highland Park and St. Joan of Arc in St. Clair Shores. Since 1990, she has been at Nazareth, ministering as a sacristan in the Holy Family Chapel and volunteering.

Sr. Pieper is survived by two sisters, Gladys Callen. and Clara Scalph; a brother, LeRoy Pieper; and nieces and nephews.

Her funeral Mass was to have been June 30 in the Holy Family Chapel.
