Sr. Jane Mackowiak, RSM, a Sister of Mercy for 72 years, died Dec. 13 at McAuley Center in Farmington Hills. She was 92.

Agatha Jane was born May 8, 1924, in Gaylord to Stanislaus and Catherine (Kolany) Mackowiak. She was the youngest of 13 children and graduated from St. Mary High School in 1942. On Sept. 7, 1944, she joined the Sisters of Mercy in Detroit, making perpetual vows Aug. 16, 1950, and taking the name Sr. Mary Placide.

She taught elementary school in Bay City, Traverse City and Muskegon, later teaching high school in Ludington, Grand Rapids, Detroit and Bay City until 1971. She served as a principal while pursuing her master’s degree at the University of Detroit. She served as provincial secretary from 1971-78 and then became administrative assistant to the principal of Mercy High School for the next 20 years.

Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Dec. 16 at McAuley Center. Burial is in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
