Sr. Jean Chipman, IHM, 91, died Oct. 9 in the IHM Health Care Center, Monroe.Sr. Chipman was one of three children of Edward and Margaret (Dorsey) Chipman, born May 20, 1924, in Detroit. She attended St. Gregory in Detroit and became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1942, receiving the religious name Sr. Clarentia.
Sr. Chipman earned degrees from Marygrove College and Wayne State University in Detroit. She taught for 30 years at St. Mary and St. Michael, Monroe; Holy Redeemer, St. Vincent, St. Raymond and St. Boniface, Detroit; St. Patrick, Carleton; Mother of Our Savior, Redford; St. Vincent, Pontiac; Sacred Heart, Dearborn; Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge; Holy Name Birmingham; and St. Bede, Southfield.
In 1975, Sr. Chipman commenced pastoral ministry at St. Timothy Parish, Trenton, and later at Sacred Heart Parish, Grosse Ile, and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Detroit. She later ministered as an adult education teacher at Adult Outreach in Detroit and volunteered in Center Line and Monroe.
Sr. Chipman is survived by her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Verna Leona (Mrs. Dickson), and her brother, Edward.
Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus. A Remembering, followed by a memorial Mass, will be Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel.
