Sr. Joan Sopha, OP

Sr. Joan Sopha, OP, formerly Sr. Daniel Michael Sopha, died June 8 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 88 and in her 68th year in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Sopha was born in Port Huron to Herbert and Mary (Lynch) Sopha. She earned degrees from Barry College (University) in Miami Shores, Fla., and Wayne State University in Detroit.

Sr. Sopha spent 26 years in elementary education in Ohio, Florida, and Michigan, including at St. Basil, East Detroit (1959-61); St. Jude, Detroit (1961-63); St. Mary, New Baltimore (1963-65); St. Peter, Harper Woods (1965-66); St. Ambrose, Detroit (1966-70); St. Margaret, St. Clair Shores (1970-71); Our Lady Star of the Sea, Grosse Pointe Farms (1971-73); Notre Dame High School, Harper Woods (1976-96); L’anse Creuse Learning Center, Harrison Township (1996-99); and as a catechism teacher and volunteer in the Roseville area.

A funeral Mass was offered in St. Catherine Chapel in Adrian on June 16. Rite of Committal was to be in the Congregation cemetery.
