Sr. Joann Weigang, OP, formerly Sr. Kathleen Michael Weigang, died Aug. 4 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 81 and in the 62nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sr. Weigang was born in Detroit to Joseph and Catherine (Csernai) Weigang. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and earned history degrees from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian. Sr. Weigang spent 32 years in elementary education in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Iowa. In Michigan, she served at St. Gregory, Newberry (1953-54); St. John Seminary, Plymouth (1954); St. Mary, St. Clair (1970-71); SS. Peter and Paul, Ruth (1971-73, 1976-79 as principal); Our Lady Star of the Sea, Grosse Pointe (1973-76); St. Lawrence, Utica (1980-85); and St. Raymond, Detroit (1985-86, 1986-87 as principal). She also ministered as a medical assistant for one year in Sebewaing. Sr. Weigang is survived by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Sr. Patricia Weigang, also an Adrian Dominican. A funeral Mass was offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Aug. 6. Rite of Committal was to be in the Congregation cemetery.
