
Sr. Loretta Mellon, OP, formerly Sr. James Matilda Mellon, died May 28 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 95 and in 67th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sr. Mellon was born in Jasonville, Ind., to James and Matilda (McKernan) Mellon. She graduated from St. Ambrose High School in Detroit and received degrees from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, the University of San Francisco and the University of Detroit.
Sr. Mellon spent 23 years ministering in education in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and California. In Michigan, she taught at St. Paul, Grosse Pointe Farms (1961-65); Our Lady Queen of All Saints, Fraser (1966-69); Macomb and Wayne Community College, Warren (1969-71). She also ministered as director of the Ellis Ecumenical House of Prayer in Fraser (1971-73), and served at the Christian Mission, Inc., in Adrian, and Celebrate Life Ministries in St. Clair Shores from 1985-2010.
Sr. Mellon is survived by a sister, Lily Lewins, and nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was June 1 at St. Catherine Chapel in Adrian. Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
