Sr. Lucy Coressel, formerly known as Eunice Cecilia Coressel, died August 6 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 97 and in her 74th year of religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sr. Coressel was born in Defiance, Ohio, to John and Lucy (Sweets) Coressel. She graduated from Defiance High Schooland received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Arts degree in Latin from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Sr. Coressel spent 34 years ministering in education in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, she taught at St. Dominic in Detroit (1937-38), Visitation in Detroit (1940-44, 47-53, 56-57), St. Ambrose in Detroit (1944-47), Dominican High School in Detroit (1953-55), and St. Paul High School in Grosse Pointe Farms (1958-65). She then served at congregation institutions in California and Florida. Sr. Coressel became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2000.
Sr. Coressel is survived by a loving nephew. She was preceded in death by a cousin, Sr. Clare Marie Mekus, also an Adrian Dominican Sister.
Detroit, Grosse Pointe Farms and Ruth, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Cleveland and Assumption (Swanton), Ohio. Sister was Principal for 5 years at St. Mary School in Assumption, Ohio. She was a secretary for 5 years at Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital in Santa Cruz, California; and for 21 years at Barry College/ University in Miami Shores, Florida, both Congregation institutions.
Visitation was to have been from 6:15 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, in the Rose Room of the Dominican Life Center, followed by a Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. Her funeral Mass was to have been offered at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, in the St. Catherine Chapel.
