Sr. Mary Frances Hogan, IHM, formerly Sr. Christiana Hogan, IHM, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, at her home, the IHM Sisters’ Motherhouse in Monroe, where she had been under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice. She was 91.
Born Aug. 9, 1919, she was one of three children — one boy and two girls — born to John and Catherine (Killeen) Hogan, and was given the name Mary Frances.
Sr. Hogan attended Annunciation elementary and high school in Detroit, and became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1942, taking the religious name of Sr. Christiana.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College, Detroit, and master’s degrees from Marquette University, Milwaukee, and the University of Detroit.
Sr. Hogan taught in formal education for 45 years at Immaculata, Detroit; St. Mary Academy, Monroe; St. Anne, Warren; Gabriel Richard, Riverview; and Marian High School, Bloomfield Hills, as well as at schools in Illinois and Ohio.
In 1989, Sr. Hogan actively retired to the motherhouse, and was very involved in social justice issues, currents events, politics, reading and writing.
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Ann Hogan; a sister-in-law, Esther; and nieces nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 21, in the motherhouse chapel by Fr. Marc Gawronski. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery on the motherhouse campus.
