Sister of Christian Charity M. Madeline Portner died April 5 at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette, Ill. She was 104.

Martha Clara Portner was born Jan. 14, 1913, in Lafayette Township, Minn. On Aug. 21, 1937 – she pronounced first vows. Sister made her perpetual vows Aug. 20, 1943.

Sr. Portner taught in Detroit for two years, then in Hazel Park for four years. In 1943 she returned to St. Elizabeth School in Detroit, where she spent the next 11 years teaching elementary grades.

She also ministered in Minnesota, Louisiana, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Sacred Heart Convent chapel on April 11. She is buried in the sisters’ cemetery in Wilmette.
