Sr. MaezShe was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Saguache, Colo., one of six children of Herman and Fidelia (Vigil) Maez.
She entered the Dominican Sisters in Grand Rapids as a postulant on Sept. 8, 1941. She received her religious formation at Marywood in Grand Rapids and became a novice Aug. 15, 1942, taking the religious name Sr. Herman Marie. She made her profession of vows Aug. 20, 1943.
Sr. Maez spent several years teaching in Michigan, Canada and New Mexico, and helped start a mission in Chimbote, Peru, in 1963. After discerning her vocation to the contemplative life, she went to the Dominican Monastery of Our Lady Mt. Thabor in Ortonville in 1979.
A Mass of Resurrection was May 13 at Mt. Thabor Monastery with burial following on the monastery grounds.
