Sr. Marie Josephine Lichowicz, CSSF, completed her life’s journey in St. Mary Mercy Hospital, Livonia, on April 11. She was 79 and in religious life for 62 years.
Josephine Lichowicz was born in Detroit on April 28, 1936, to Michael and Mary (Bryndal) Lichowicz. Baptized and confirmed at St. Stanislaus Church, Detroit, Josephine was accepted into the Felician Congregation on June 21, 1953. At the investiture ceremony in 1954, she received the name Sr. Mary Incarnata, later changed to Marie Josephine. First vows were in 1955 and final profession in 1961.
Sr. Lichowicz earned degrees from Madonna University and the University of Detroit. She served in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, including at St. Andrew, Sacred Heart, St. Louis the King, St. Hyacinth, SS. Christine/Gemma in Detroit; St. Francis, Flint; Holy Family, Ontonagon; St. Valentine, Kawkawlin; St. Cecilia, Clare; Manistee Catholic Central, Manistee; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte; Our Lady Queen of Apostles, Hamtramck; St. Genevieve, Livonia; and St. Joseph, Jackson. She served as a principal for 28 of her 49 years in education.
Sr. Lichowicz served as sacristan and activity aide at St. Francis Nursing Home in Saginaw; local minister in Livonia; and at the Maryville Convent in Holly. She served as a house aide at St. Thecla Convent in Clinton Township in 2013.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 14 at the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel of the Central Convent of the Felician Sisters in Livonia. Burial is in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
