Sr. Marie Michael Sibal, OP, formerly known as Mary Sibal, died Oct. 21, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 99 and in the 78th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
She was born in Chicago to Michael and Mary (Schultz) Sibal. She graduated from Washington Gardner High School in Albion, and received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in history from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian.
Sister spent 52 years ministering in education, including at St. Lawrence, Utica (1932-33); Holy Name, Detroit (1937); St. Dominic, Detroit (1940-46); Our Lady of Sorrows, Detroit (1946-54); Our Lady Gate of Heaven, Detroit (1954-59); St. Lawrence, Detroit (1959-62); St. Gemma, Detroit(1962—64); St. Gabriel, Detroit(1964-67); St. Brigid, Detroit (1967-70); and St. Thomas Aquinas, East Lansing (1970-72).
She came to the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 1993, where she volunteered her services in several areas: St. Catherine Library, drapery room, flower gardens and receptionist.
Sr. Sibal is survived by three sisters, Agnes Sibal, Helen Clark and Martha Gunderson. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sr. Vincent Joseph Sibal and Sr. Catherine Therese Sibal, both were Adrian Dominican Sisters.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 26 in St. Catherine Chapel, Adrian. Burial was in the congregation’s cemetery.
