Sr. Martin Mary Ryan, OP, formerly known as Havelina Julia Ryan, died Aug. 26 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 92 and the 74th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.Sr. Ryan was born in Chicago to James and Mary Ann (McLeod) Ryan. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian and received a bachelor of arts degree in Latin from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, and a master of education degree in education administration from DePaul University in Chicago.
Sr. Ryan spent 50 years ministering in elementary education in Michigan, Illinois and Iowa. In Michigan, she taught at St. Augustine, Detroit (1940-44); Our Lady of Sorrows, Detroit (1944-45); St. Paul, Owosso (1945-52); and St. John, Ypsilanti (1955-57).
She was also a teacher for 14 years at Star of the Sea School in Chicago and was principal at St. Francis Xavier School in Chicago from 1972-77. Sr. Ryan became a resident of the Dominican Life center in Adrian in 2004.
Sr. Ryan is survived by a niece, Mary Morgan of Bourbonnais, Ill., and a nephew, Raymond Malecki of Chicago.
