Sister Mary Barbara Brys (Cecilia Marie Brys), OP, died Nov. 10 at Lourdes Nursing Home in Waterford. She was 91 years old and had been in religious life for 76 years.
Cecilia Marie Brys was born June 2, 1922, to Joseph and Anna Tomko Brys in Bell, Pa. She attended grade school at SS. Cyril and Methodius School in Detroit, high school at Felician Academy and college at Siena Heights. She also attended graduate school at the University of Detroit.
She entered religious life Aug. 17, 1937, and made her final profession of vows Aug. 18, 1946.
As a religious sister, Sr. Brys served at SS. Cyril and Methodius, Detroit; SS. Andrew and Benedict, Detroit; Sacred Heart, Flint; St. Joseph Parish, Owosso; and Sacred Heart Parish, Caro.
Sr. Brys is survived by a niece, Shirley Lackowski of Clinton Township; cousin, Richard A. Petrovich of Sterling Heights; many cousins and friends, especially Dr. Brian and Diana Donlon, and her community, the Dominican Sisters of Peace at the Motherhouse in Oxford.
Sr. Brys was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers — Rudolph, Thomas, Andrew, and Michael Brys, George, John, and Joseph Cherniansky — and three sisters: Anne Cherniansky, Helen Matwiju and Mary Bates.
