Sr. Mary Dolores Ann, Dolores Nowaczewski, of Hamtramck, entered eternal life on July 11 at St. Mary Mercy Hospital, Livonia. She was 89 and in religious life for 70 years.Born Dec. 14, 1927, in Hamtramck, Dolores was the eighth of nine children to Frank and Antoinette (Szymanski). Following her graduation from St. Florian, Dolores was accepted as a postulant into the Felician Congregation on Aug. 15, 1946. She received the Felician habit and veil the following year and received the name Sr. Mary Cabrini, but later changed her name to Sr. Dolores Ann. First profession of vows was Aug. 16, 1948, and final profession Aug. 12, 1954.
Sr. Nowaczewski earned degrees from Madonna University and St. Bonaventure University in New York. For 54 years, she taught primary grades across Michigan, including in Detroit, Wyandotte, Flint, Alpena, Bay City, Mt. Clemens, Jackson, Dearborn, Hamtramck, Southfield and Livonia. For 23 of those years, she also served as a principal.
In 2003, she retired from teaching and became director of postulants for the Felicians for five years. It was at this time that she became acquainted with the City of Livonia Commodity Food Distribution Program, where she and the postulants assisted monthly. When she retired to Presentation Convent in Livonia, she served as a driver, sacristan assistant and hospitality supervisor and assisted with assigned duties.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 14 in the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel of the Felician Sisters’ Central Convent in Livonia. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.
