Sr. Mary Ladisla Gogowski, a longtime teacher in Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois, died of complications of leukemia on June 22 at Resurrection Life Center in Chicago. She was 96 and had been a professed member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for 76 years.
Antoinette Mary Gogowski was born in Chicago on Sept. 8, 1915, to Polish immigrants John and Mary (Pociask) Gogowski. She entered the Milwaukee Candidature of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1931 and on becoming a novice was given the religious name Mary Ladisla. She made her first profession of vows in August 1935 and her final vows in 1941.
Her first teaching assignment was at St. Leo School in Milwaukee, where she served from 1935 to 1949. She also taught junior high grades at St. Anne in Milwaukee (1949-55) and was principal at Sacred Heart School in Grosse Ile, Mich. (1955-61). In 1961, Sr. Ladisla moved to Chicago and spent a year teaching at St. John Cantius, where she had attended grammar school, and two years at St. Helena of the Cross.
In 1964 she began a long tenure at Academy of Our Lady School in Chicago. Sr. Ladisla moved to Resurrection Life Center in 2003.
Sr. Ladisla earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1945 from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee.
A Mass of Christian burial was July 2 at Divine Savior Church in Norridge, Ill. Burial followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, Ill.
Sr. Ladisla is survived by two nieces and several great nieces and nephews.
