Sr. Mary Margaret (Harriet) Durack, IHM

18-Sr-DurackSr. Mary Margaret Durack, IHM, 91, died Oct. 9 in the IHM Health Care Center in Monroe.

Sr. Durack was one of five children of Thomas and Mary (Wines) Durack, born May 18, 1924, in Detroit. She attended St. Cecilia in Detroit and became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1942, receiving the religious name of Sr. Harriet.

Sr. Durack earned degrees from Marygrove College and Wayne State University in Detroit. She taught for 50 years at St. Joseph, Erie; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; St. Matthew, Flint; St. Mary, Wayne; St. Joseph, Dexter; St. Michael, Monroe as principal; Holy Name, Birmingham; Our Lady of Sorrows, Farmington; and in Detroit at Our Lady of Good Counsel and St. Gregory, culminating with 13 years at Our Lady of Loretto.

For the next 16 years, Sr. Durack volunteered in the Redford area at St. Mary School and St. Christine Parish Food Kitchen in Detroit.

Sr. Durack is survived by her brother, Thomas, and her sisters, Eileen (Mrs. John Muldowney), Sr. Anne (Thomas Marie), IHM, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Julia (Maryknoll Sr. Maria Luz).

Mass of Christian Burial was Oct. 13 at the IHM Motherhouse. Burial was to follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
