Sr. Mary Patricia Malone, RSM, died Aug. 19 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor. She was 89 and had been a Sister of Mercy for 66 years.

Sr. Malone was born to Marie Jeanne (Hoyle) and Harley Malone on April 5, 1926, in Onaway, Mich. She had one sibling, Harley Jr. The future Sr. Malone taught in local schools until her entrance into the Sisters of Mercy in Detroit on Sept. 7, 1949. She made perpetual vows Aug. 16, 1955.

Sr. Malone taught in parish schools in Michigan for several years, including in Remus, Berkley, Pinconning, Muskegon, Cheboygan, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Hazel Park. She served as a counselor at Mt. Mercy Academy for four years. She served in jail ministry for the Diocese of Grand Rapids, and later as pastoral administrator at Shrine Parish of St. Joseph in Pontiac in 1987.

Mass of Christian Burial was Aug. 22 at the McAuley Life Center in Farmington Hills, followed by interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
