Sr. Mary V. Korb, RSM

Sr. Mary V. Korb, RSM, died Jan. 7 at Beaumont/Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills. She was 89 and a Sister of Mercy for almost 65 years.

Beatrice Korb was born to Stephen and Hazel (Ramsey) Korb in Traverse City on Oct. 12, 1927, one of four children along with an older brother and sister and her twin sister, Betty. She earned a degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids and taught math for two years at St. Andrew High School in Saginaw before joining the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 7, 1952. She received the name Sr. Mary Victor and made final vows Aug. 16, 1958.

Sr. Korb chaired the math department at Mercy High School in Detroit for 10 years, while earning a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Detroit. Afterward, she served as registrar at Mercy College of Detroit before being asked to serve as treasurer of the Province of Detroit in 1972. During her time there, she enrolled the Sisters in the Social Security program, and administered the province’s retirement plan for 19,000 participants across Mercy schools and hospitals. She later earned an MBA from Michigan State University.

Sr. Korb served as director of finance and administrative services for the Archdiocese of Detroit from 1979-98 before becoming director of the archdiocesan cemeteries for the next 12 years. When Sr. Korb retired in 2010, Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron wrote, “Your leadership of our Central Services’ finance and administration and of Catholic Cemeteries has been exceptional. You have been a diligent, conscientious and faithful steward of all that has been entrusted to your care.”

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Jan. 12 at the Mercy Center Chapel in Farmington Hills. Interment is at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
