Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Rose Marie Hewitt (the former Sister Anna Marie), 78, died Oct. 4 in her home in Cincinnati. She was born July 30, 1934, in Grayling, to Earl and Mary (Cassidy) Hewitt. Sr. Rose Marie was a Sister of Charity for 59 years.
Sister earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the College of Mount St. Joseph (Cincinnati) in 1960; a Master of Arts in Administration from Xavier University (Cincinnati) in 1970; and a master’s degree in pastoral studies from Loyola University in Chicago in 1988.
Sr. Rose Marie graduated from St. James School, Bay City, in 1952. She embarked on a 28-year ministry in education, serving at schools in Ohio, Michigan and New Mexico, including as principal, Elizabeth Seton, Milford (1964-72); teacher, St. James, Bay City (1973-77); and principal, Immaculate Conception, St. Charles (1977-79).
In 1979, Sr. Hewitt became provincial of the Great Lakes Province of the Sisters of Charity, Detroit.
In 1988, Sr. Hewitt began a new career as director of the Congregation’s Ministry Office at the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse. She became the coordinator of the New Beginnings program for the Diocese of Covington, Ky., in 1994.
Sr. Hewitt is survived by her sisters Patricia Cook and Constance Hewitt as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters Monica Fulvio, Betty Timm, Ann Marie Hewitt and Phyllis Lenzi, and brothers Earl, Tom and Mike Hewitt.
Mass of Christian Burial was Oct. 9 in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial is in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
