Sr. Teresa Margaret Van Tassel, RSM, died Feb. 22 at McAuley Center in Farmington Hills. She was 92 and had been a Sister of Mercy for nearly 78 years.

She was born Margaret Mary Johanna May 11, 1918 to parents Charles and Margaret VanTassel. At 15, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in the city of her birth, Rochester, N.Y. She made her temporary profession of vows in 1936.

After 35 years as a teacher and administrator in Catholic schools in Rochester, Sr. VanTassel began ministering to the elderly. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, she served at Our Lady of Refuge Parish in Orchard Lake and Mercy Services to the Aged and Bellbrook Retirement Center in Rochester.

She retired from active ministry in 1999 to the ministry of prayer at McAuley Center.
