Sr. Virginia Hafey-Wells, OP, formerly known as Sr. Marie Peter Hafey-Wells, died Dec. 2 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 91 and in the 73rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
She was born in Detroit, to Michael and Lydia (Williams) Hafey. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, and received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in History from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, a Master of Education degree from Barry College (University) in Miami Shores, Fla., and a Master of Music degree in Music Education from Florida State University in Tallahassee.
Sr. Hafey-Wells spent 34 years ministering in education in Michigan; Florida; Illinois; Ohio; Alabama and the Bahamas, including locally at St. Lawrence, Utica (1939-40).
She ministered at Cotey Interior Design in Chicago, working for non-profit groups from 1984 to 1998. She was an interior designer for 21 years for the Adrian Dominican Motherhouse. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2006.
Sr. Hafey-Wells is survived by two sisters, Patricia Kelly of Waterford Township and Jacqueline Crow of Charleston, S.C.; and one brother, John Wells of Winter Park, Fla.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 7 in St. Catherine Chapel at the motherhouse in Adrian. Burial was in the congregation’s cemetery.
