Larry Griffin, donations relations manager of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Detroit, speaks before a ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 7 at the Detroit Police Department’s 4th Precinct.Detroit – The Detroit chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society joined forces with the Detroit Police Department on Nov. 7 to bring warmth to families in need this winter.
A special event held in the Detroit Police Department’s 4th Precinct unveiled the first in a collection of clothing donation bins that will be placed around the city for citizens to donate their gently used clothing.
The bins, which will be placed in specific Detroit Police precincts, are the beginning of a yearlong plan to help citizens participate in more programs with the Detroit Police Department and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Larry Griffin, donations relations manager of the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Detroit chapter, said he is “on cloud nine with this program.”
“The St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Detroit Police Department have found synergy between both our organizations,” Griffin said. “We meet with people in their homes and see those who are in need — which is the same as the police department. When they’re called, they probably see more than we ever see. Why not put both our organizations together?”
He said he was especially grateful to have been able to work with Captain Darwin Roche, explaining that “he really wants to take this to the next level. He wants the police to be there for more than enforcing laws, to be there for supporting the community.”
