DETROIT —Artists with ties to local parishes have released two albums in time for Christmas.
Peter Kolar, a pianist for several years at St. Clement, Center Line; St. Sylvester and St. Edmund, Warren, has produced his debut “Variations,” a solo piano album featuring Kolar’s signature arrangements of Catholic songs such as “Joyful, Joyful” and “Come, Holy Ghost.”
Kolar, who now lives in El Paso, Texas, said he maintains ties to the Detroit area through family and his former colleagues in music and liturgy.
“Variations” also includes several other popular hymns and some of Kolar’s own piano compositions, such as his Mass setting “Misa Luna” and a Baroque-style fugue. It can be purchased for $17 at www.wlp.jspaluch.com, where a sample of his music is also available.
In addition, Gretchen Wolff and Greg Grobis of National Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak, released “A Fireside Christmas,” featuring a variety of musical styles, including classical, jazz and folk.
Wolff is a classically trained singer, pianist and guitarist whose songwriting combines influences of Americana, jazz, pop and folk. She is currently a pianist and vocalist for the Shrine’s Church Folk Group, parish choir and Saturday Evening Quartet and has released a previous original album, “Strong Ashes.”
Grobis, who also sings in the Shrine parish choir and Folk Group, has toured with the United States Collegiate Choir and is a performing arts professor at the University of Detroit Mercy.
According to a news release, “A Fireside Christmas” presents “an elegant, intimate aesthetic, like a cozy Christmas sing-along at home around the fire.”
