Farmington Hills – On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Marian High School battled its way to a Catholic League field hockey championship, beating out Mercy High School for the win by a score of 2-0.
The Mustangs completed the semifinals and finals – played on the same day on Mercy’s athletic field — without giving up a goal. Marian senior goaltender Brenna Baron recorded both shutouts.
The tournament started out with Marian edging Academy of the Sacred Heart 1-0 in the first matchup. Senior Marisa Opie scored the lone goal in that contest, just after halftime. Mercy blanked Ladywood 1-0 in the second semifinal matchup, with sophomore Maddie McClain putting in the lone score. Mercy goalie Clarissa LeVasseur, a junior, earned the shutout.
In the finals, co-captain Janie Obee scored the first goal for the Mustangs on a penalty corner — which wound up being the game-winner. Senior Sarah Michalski put in an insurance point in the second period.
